There is so much to celebrate about our NSW apprentices. At the HIA Australian Housing Awards in May, Bethany Mercieca of Blu Eco Homes took out the 2023 HIA Jim Brookes Australian Apprentice of the Year.
At the recent NSW Apprentice Awards night, it was a privilege to witness the number of talented young men and women accepting awards. In particular:
These winners are now finalists for the prestigious HIA NSW Roger Pysden Apprentice of the Year, which will be announced at the 2023 HIA-CSR NSW Housing and Kitchen and Bathroom Awards in October.
The commencement of the NCC 2022 on 1 October this year has dominated much of our political lobbying and member’s calls to our advice lines. We continue to keep members informed on what these changes mean for their business. I encourage you to attend information sessions and access the website for the most up-to-date information.
We called on the NSW Government to ensure the new BASIX energy provisions do not apply to those projects with existing building contracts. We also asked to provide the industry with a 12-month implementation delay to more effectively comply with the new measures at the lowest cost to consumers.
In a win, existing building contracts will be able to use the current BASIX rules, but the NSW Government is refusing to provide an implementation date delay. States such as VIC, SA, WA and TAS have delayed commencement to reduce the additional costs and supply chain impacts on new housing delivery. We continue to argue for a delayed start date, but time is running out. Members must prepare for the 1 October 2023 deadline.
I enjoyed meeting members at the HIA-Companion Systems Building and Business program in August. It was great to have our first NSW Minister for Building, Hon. Anoulack Chanthivong, deliver the opening address. The day was informative, with a range of exciting topics and speakers. Themes of technology and compliance dominated. The final guest speaker was former SAS medical officer and author Dr. Dan Pronk, who gave an inspiring talk on resilience. Completing the day with a chat, a drink and canapes with our supporting partners and members was a fitting end to a great event. I very much look forward to the next opportunity to meet with more of you.
