TAS President's report

{{ tag.label }} {{ tag.label }} $vuetify.icons.faTimes
After completing my first year as Tasmanian President, it is time to reflect on the achievements and issues of the past 12 months and align ourselves with the opportunities and challenges for the year ahead.

Lee Tyers

HIA Tasmanian President

During 2023, attending statewide industry forums and different state HIA Committee meetings has allowed me to learn more about our members’ challenges. This has served me well in gaining a better understanding of industry pressure points and provided me with critical information to inform our government advocacy efforts.

Armed with this information, our Executive Director Stuart Collins and I met with Nic Street, Minister for Housing and Construction, to provide an incoming brief on improvements to housing supply and affordability. We also met with Eleri Thomas-Morgan, the CEO of Homes Tasmania, and Rebecca White, the Opposition Leader, to discuss the same issues. Stuart and I have been able to highlight a number of key initiatives, including:

  • incentivisation (and making the local government accountable) of local housing targets
  • adoption of genuine private planning certification
  • prioritisation and streamlining of significant housing projects
  • provision of a targeted medium-density residential code
  • investment in trade skills
  • utilisation of the private sector to help deliver social and affordable homes
  • development of a land supply strategy.

The government is listening, and our industry is finally getting traction on these issues. I am determined to see as many of these positive reforms as possible implemented before my tenure is up.

As president, I have also discovered that there is much more to our organisation than just industry policy. The daily advice that helps our members to run their businesses safely, efficiently, and compliantly is invaluable. However, to remain at the top of our game, we must be agile and ready to respond.  Our Regional Executive Committee discussed some of these topics and started to workshop some issues, challenges, and opportunities. This helped set a platform to engage with our Executive Director Stuart Collins to establish a HIA Tasmania Business Plan. This will ultimately set short and median directions for our organisation with defined KPIs and benchmarks. We are forever grateful for the efforts and skills that Stuart brings to Tasmania to develop a national example with this deliverable.

I have been excited by the continued growth of youthBuild and the local HIA Apprenticeship Scheme. Seeing us invest in the next generation is important, and witnessing the multiple apprentice nominees, each with their own depth of expertise, up on stage at the recent awards night is a good reminder of this.

We have some current challenges now and in the year ahead regarding the current state of the economy and its impact on certain parts of the industry. Recent economic data would suggest it may get worse before it gets better.  I am passionate about wanting to work with the government and the industry to see what can be done to help bring some workflow forward.  We are in discussions with Homes Tasmania and will hold another workshop with them shortly to see if there are any housing opportunities. I also encourage members to look out for each other regarding mental health through this time.

I look forward to reporting on new initiatives and changes that enhance HIA’s offerings based on member feedback over the year ahead. In the meantime, I will continue to advocate passionately for you, our members and the industry.

Finally, I would also like to thank past presidents, the Regional Executive Committee members and Vice President Domonee van Heerden for their support during 2023. I would also like to thank all committee and HIA members for the work they have done to support over the past year.
