With housing prioritised as a key issue in the Federal Election, both parties provided a raft of announcements to boost housing supply. Housing reform will remain a central focus as the nation continues to be challenged with land and housing supply and skilled labour shortages.
HIA’s Let’s Build Australia campaign addressed strategies needed to turn around the significant shortage of housing across North Queensland.
- Removing the barriers to housing supply.
- Establishing financial systems that encourage homeownership; and
- Addressing skills shortages.
The incoming government needs waste no time implementing their election promises relating to the delivery of housing across our region. Whilst the policies are a good start in addressing the industry’s concerns, much more work and broader reforms are needed. HIA will continue to work with all levels of government to support the supply of much needed land and housing.
Strong interest has been shown for Round 1 of the Queensland Government Residential Activation Fund, which closed on 23 May. The funding ($500m) is available to local government, developers, and landowners with a Development Approval for a residential development necessitating the construction of trunk and essential infrastructure. Projects need to commence within 12 months of a funding agreement. For more information visit Residential Activation Fund.
Effective from 1 May, the Queensland Governments new laws kick-in to abolish stamp duty on new homes for first home buyers.

Researchers give pre-apprenticeship training the nod
“Of the estimated 34,000 apprentices who will commence a construction trade apprenticeship this year, we expect fewer than 20,000 will make it through to complete their qualification. This must improve,” stated Geordan Murray, Executive Director - Future Workforce.
