North Queensland

Keeping you up-to-date with the latest news, insights and advice across your region.

Following our Annual Meeting of Members, we congratulate incoming HIA North Queensland President, Harald Weber and Vice President Ryan Bird, whose leadership over the coming 2 years will be invaluable in supporting our members and advocating for the industry. Read more

We would also like to thank outgoing President, Kent Hams, for his leadership and passion for the building industry over the past 2 years, bettering the position of the Association and strongly promoting the needs of the housing industry both regionally and nationally.

HIA has launched its Federal Election priorities under the banner of “Let’s Build.” As the peak industry association representing those that can make the dream of home ownership a reality. We are asking all political parties to be outraged over the status quo and be bold, be courageous, and prioritise initiatives which directly improve housing supply in regional Queensland. For more information on HIA’s approach to this Federal Election.

We have seen many regions across the north and central inland Queensland impacted by flooding following the severe weather event causing days of rain.  This has further challenged the industry with delays due to accessing of sites and material delays along with rectification work that is further drawing on available trades. If you are experiencing challenges, please reach out to our team and see how we can assist you and your business accessing our HIA services to support you.

Queensland’s Housing and Public Works Minister Sam O’Connor recently made announcements aimed at cutting red tape and reducing unnecessary costs for builders and contractors. Most significantly, he announced the further rollout of Project Trust Accounts due this year to capture projects down to 1 million dollars will be paused, something HIA lobbied for in its Election Manifesto. The Annual financial reporting requirements for SC1 and SC2 contractors have also been removed.

The Minister also committed to introducing a Queensland Housing Code, something we have been personally lobbying in favour of for 12 years. You can read more about the announcement here.
