HIA works with many different organisations to help support and positively impact our industry and benefit our members.
The HIA Charitable Foundation (HIACF) was introduced in 2012 to provide assistance to a wide range of initiatives across a broad spectrum of worthy causes. This philanthropic ideal is the cornerstone of the foundation. The Foundation has donated over $1million to charity, providing much-needed funds for specific research into mesothelioma, mental health programs, and funding building shelter for the homeless.
Partnering with leading mental health organisation Beyond Blue, HIA aims to raise awareness and support to aid the fight against depression, anxiety and reduce the suicide rate within the building industry.
HIA has partnered with the Land and Housing Corporation (LAHC) NSW on an apprentice project. The program will target around 185 apprentice employment outcomes from primarily social and community housing backgrounds, aboriginal, women, disabled and other disadvantaged groups.
As one of Australia's first professional green building programs, HIA GreenSmart offers a professional training course, project, and business accreditation for builders and designers looking to develop new green building skills. This ongoing initiative is helping our industry get official green building credentials and promote these services to the marketplace.
To raise awareness of the HIA Charitable Foundation and its initiative to improve mental health in the construction industry, HIA is running the ‘Bucket Hat’ campaign, which will run until the end of 2021. The HIA Charitable Foundation believe every individual deserves to not feel isolated – no matter - Where they live, work and play.
HIA Building Women helps to foster opportunities for entering the building industry and recognises the needs of women already working in building and construction, and acknowledging the contribution of women to the industry. We can learn so much from each other, and together we can break down the barriers and increase the visibility of women’s roles within our sector. Our Building Women award program showcases outstanding women in their chosen career in the building industry.
HIA has partnered with the iCare Foundation on a worksite safety initiative. This program will connect with apprentices and youth working in the Australian construction industry to raise awareness and empower changed behaviour regarding worksite safety. The construction industry has significantly higher physical injury claims when compared to other industry sectors. This program's long-term objective is to effect behavioural change on building sites throughout NSW. The aim is to reduce all levels of workplace accident and injury over time. This initiative will create awareness of the issues and behaviours contributing to injuries on-site. This program commenced in June 2020 and will run for the next three years.
HIA will conduct a two-year project from 2021 which will drive outcomes that create mentally healthy workplaces in conjunction with WorkWell Victoria. HIA will be working with a small number of Victorian builders, their staff and sub-contractors in the delivery of the project. HIA will create a Learning Network to promote mental health and wellbeing for vulnerable Victorian working populations. Those identified for WorkWell include young workers, ageing workers, frontline workers and industries in transition, which includes construction. This will be achieved through changing cultures and practices in Victorian workplaces by providing high-value investment to create long-term, sustainable and organisation-wide change.
You can count on HIA - our unwavering commitment to our members hasn’t changed. Everything we do is to support our members.
We also strive to give back to our community through our initiatives programs.
