Safe havens

Offer a safe environment for people to raise their families in the NT.

HIA recommends the next Northern Territory Government:

  • To ensure that the police and other emergency services are provided with necessary support and resources required to keep Territorians safe.
  • Implement business growth and a security package that provides grants for small businesses to improve safety and security to combat theft and property damage.
  • Support program for young Territorians across high schools to build confidence and capability to make safe, responsible decisions.

A community will not continue to grow unless the basic needs are provided for their wellbeing.

For years, the anti-social behaviour and crime rates have been allowed to rise and take hold in all centres of the NT and this has had a huge impact on those looking for the peace and safety this region once offered.

A new government needs to take control of the anti-social behaviour exhibited by some of the community.

  • The recent NT Budget included $1.2 billion funding commitments for public order and safety, and $723 million in social protection. This will deliver a range of initiatives to build safer, fairer and more resilient communities.
  • This is an important step forward, but Territorians need to see this being effective on the ground to address the ongoing challenges that communities have faced.
  • Businesses also need to be supported so they can invest with confidence for potential business growth, resilience and grants. These are available for small businesses to improve safety and security and reduce crime rates such as theft and property damage.
