HIA recommends the next Northern Territory Government:
- Provide a $10,000 home renovation grant, support upgrades to existing housing to meet current standards, improve its energy efficiency performance and build resilience to natural disasters.
- Implement a wide scale public, social and community housing retrofit program. This would improve the houses’ performance to meet current standards and enhance these homes’ amenities for occupants.
The Territory has an extensive existing housing stock in need of urgent upgrade to satisfy new standards and compliance changes.
This would additionally provide aesthetic improvements to rejuvenate suburbs and generate greater neighbourhood connections.
Old housing stock in urban areas dates back anywhere between 40 to 60 years and an upgrade will bring them in line with newer and compliant stock of housing.
It will bring a cleaner and updated look and bring up value in real estate, which is much needed in today’s market.
This segment of the market could generate significant economic activity for the residential building and renovation market as well as support greater retail activity.
Alongside this, a large number of existing public, social and community housing require updating and improving its performance for occupants and resilience as well as improving its amenity.
