HIA recommends the next Northern Territory Government:
- Establish a one-stop-shop for housing coordination across government.
- Improved industry consultation and coordination is needed to ensure government and industry aims and expectations on housing delivery are aligned.
The NT Government needs departments that have portfolios relevant to building all come under the one banner to work together. Instead of working against each other, they should significantly streamline the building and approval processes.
For example, while the Public Housing department supports and delivers more housing faster and cheaper, other departments are busy announcing further restrictive regulation on industry. These changes carry extra costs to building and ultimately result in higher costs for consumers.
- There is a need for government housing coordination to ensure a single authority is responsible for all key housing delivery issues - home building industry regulation and planning, WHS, small business, taxation - and is responsible to a single Minister in Cabinet ideally reporting directly to the Chief Minister in a Treasury portfolio.
- This would speed up process, cut out unnecessary bureaucracy and red and green tape, and improve industry coordination and consultation – to ensure government and industry aims and expectations are aligned.
