Future proofing the industry

Future proofing the industry

  • TAFE and RTO Funding
  • Builder Development Programs
  • Procurement for the future

The next State Government must act on the immediate challenges but also be forward thinking to ensure we don’t end up here again.

Looking to the future to ensure we have the skills, resources, land and appropriate economic setting that ensure the delivery of a minimum 20,000 will take equal amounts of science and crystal ball gazing.

Part of that delivery is the trade and business skills to ensure we have high functioning building businesses.

It will also be important that as industry strives towards net zero that the next Government is looking to the future to ensure we have the commodities to get us there. Timber, steel, sand and concrete are just a few that will be important resources to meet our targets but if we don’t start addressing now, it may be too late and lead to large price increases as supply becomes competitive.

HIA urges the next State Government to have an eye on the future as well as address the challenges of the present.

The Construction Training Fund has played a significant role in supporting the building industry over the last 4 years. The proactive nature and co-ordination of activities and funding is critical to exposing, attracting and retaining as may people to the building industry as possible.

Policy initiatives

TAFE and RTO Funding
Increased funding to TAFEs to increase capacity to train the volume of workers WA requires.
Builder Development Programs
Investment in educational programs for new trades and builders to equip them with the skills of being a business owner in the industry.
Procurement for the future
A department within Treasury that is modelling the availability and access to resources such as timber, steel and concrete etc based on the state’s future needs and investment.
